Using the Catalogue Raisonné of Toller Cranston

We hope the information below helps you better understand how the Toller Cranston Catalogue Raisonné is organized and how to navigate it with ease. Our goal is to make exploring Toller’s artwork clear, engaging, and accessible to collectors, researchers, and admirers alike.

This is an ongoing project. As new works are discovered and additional information becomes available, entries may be updated or expanded.

IMAGES

This Catalogue Raisonné has been created with the  cooperation of collectors who have shared images and information about works in both private and public collections.  Details on how to submit your Toller Cranston artwork is noted at the end of this document,

We have made every effort to present strong, clear digital colour images. However, image quality may vary depending on the available source material. Some works have been photographed in private homes or older archives, and colour tones may differ slightly from the original.

On the Catalogue index page, both the image and the artwork title link directly to the full entry. Where available, additional images — such as details, signatures, inscriptions, or the reverse of the work — are included to provide helpful context.

CATALOGUE ENTRIES

Each artwork has been assigned a unique catalogue number. This number serves as the permanent reference for that piece and is useful when citing or inquiring about a specific work.

Entries may include:

  • Title (and alternate titles, if known)
  • Date (or approximate date)
  • Medium
  • Dimensions
  • Signature details
  • Provenance (ownership history)
  • Exhibition history (where known)
  • Literature references
  • Notes or additional information

As research continues, entries may be refined or supplemented.

TITLES

Many of Toller Cranston’s works were originally untitled. In some cases, titles were later assigned by galleries or collectors. Where alternate titles exist, they are included to reflect variations found in exhibition catalogues, publications, or gallery records.

You may search for works using full or partial titles through the keyword search function.

DATING

Dates are based on signatures, exhibition records, documentation, or stylistic comparison. When a precise date is not confirmed, works may be listed as “circa” or attributed to a general period.

PROVENANCE

Ownership history is included wherever known. In some cases, the year of acquisition is also noted.

Out of respect for privacy, certain collectors have requested that their names not be published. In these instances, works are identified simply as “Private Collection.” Additional details may be held on file but are not publicly displayed.

Where permission has been granted, collector names may link to other works in their collection.

Collectors and institutions who wish to update provenance information are welcome to contact us.

FILTER & SEARCH FUNCTIONS

The filter function appears at the top of the Catalogue page and allows users to refine their search.

Search options include:

  • Medium: Oil, ink, prints, and other classifications
  • Keyword Search: Catalogue number, title, owner or institution name, city, country etc. Reset Filters before searching entire catalogue.

These tools are designed to make browsing and researching the collection straightforward and efficient.

MEDIUM & CLASSIFICATION

Works are organized by medium (for example: oil, acrylic, ink, mixed media, prints, etc.). Where documentation is limited, classifications reflect the best available information.

EXHIBITIONS

When known, exhibition histories are included to show where and when a work was publicly presented. These records offer insight into the life of the artwork over time.

LITERATURE

Because of the wide scope of Cranston’s artistic output, it is not always possible to list every publication in which a work has appeared. We have included the most relevant and significant references available at the time of publication.

As this project continues, new literature references will be added when discovered.

ONGOING RESEARCH

The Catalogue Raisonné is a living document. We welcome additional information, images, or documentation that may help expand and strengthen the record of Toller Cranston’s artistic legacy.
